Native Removals in 2025 by US Government

The Indian Removal Act of 1830 was signed by President Andrew Jackson. Through it, Native peoples were removed from their homelands. A different kind of removal is happening in 2025 by the current president. Beginning today (March 18, 2025), I am launching this log to keep track of them. Updates will be made as I am able to do them. I invite you to send me news articles or your own findings of removals.

These Words Are Disappearing in the New Trump Administration at The New York Times on March 7, 2025 includes the phrase Native American ("tribe" and "indigenous communities" are also on the list).

The screenshot shows the lower third of the list and the first paragraph of the article. In my work at American Indians in Children's Literature, I use several other terms that appear on the list. When I see biased content, I use "bias" or "biased" or "biased toward" -- all of which are on the list. Helping teachers see biased content is helping them be able to increase their cultural competence (that phrase is on the list). I could go on with examples of how words/phrases on the list are part of my work but will move on to examples of other ways in which the current administration's policies are removing Native people from federal websites.

"DOD,  Army websites scrub articles on Navajo Code Talkers, citing Trump DEI policies" by Arlyssa D. Becenti, at Arizona Republic. Published on March 18, 2025. I went to the Department of Defense site and put Navajo Code Talkers in the search box. There was a list of eight items. Here's a screen capture of the top portion of the list of items:

Here's what I got when I clicked on some of them:

Amid 'DEI' purge, Pentagon removes webpage on Iwo Jima flag-raiser by Jon Swaine and Alex Horton, at The Washington Post. Published on March 17, 2025. If you want to see the page that was there, a copy is in the Internet Archive. I went to the Department of Defense site and entered Ira Hayes into the search box. Here's what I got:
