In the early 1800s, Texas was a wild and dangerous land fought over by the Mexican government, Native Americans, and settlers from the United States. Beginning with the expeditions of the so-called “Land Pirates,” through the doomed stand at the Alamo, and ending with the victory over Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto, the entire Texas saga is on display. Leading the charge to settle this new frontier is Stephen F. Austin, with a cast of dangerous and colorful characters, including Jim Bowie, William Travis, David Crockett, and others.
I didn't know about this series, but it is quite popular. I'll see if I can get a copy at the library.
I am not an expert, but I did go over Alamo All-Stars again. There is a big map in the start that shows all the groups living in Texas: Comanche, Lipan Apache, Coahuiltecans, Karankawa, Tejano settlers, Northern settlers, squatters, and Jean Lafitte. Each states how long they have been there and other information. (The Apache claims that Comanche means "one who wants to fight with me all the time." Not sure about that.)
ReplyDeleteAfter that various Native Americans occasionally show up to attack various other people. One page shows two Mexican soldiers deserting saying "Santa Anna can drive out his OWN invaders." The two are surrounded and the Comanche (maybe?) warrior asks, "Now who's driving out invaders?"
So the Natives are mostly shown fighting, but nearly the whole book is about fighting. (With occasional Executioner humor)
