Interview


While I was at Westfield, MA earlier this year, I was interviewed by Evan Dobelle, President of Westfield State College for One on One with Evan Dobelle. It was the longest interview I've given (30 minutes), and it was tough. The interview is online if you want to see it. Dobelle's questions were far-ranging, some of them in areas of study that are not my focus, hence its tough nature. I don't think I made huge gaffes, but, when I've got more time, I'll study the interview. I've gone one-on-one with university presidents and chancellors before (here at UIUC), but being taped is a different experience.

    It was an "interesting" interview, Deb. Instead of having a far-ranging conversation with a scholar about her committed area of scholarship (as I imagine he probably would have done with a scholar who was part of any other ethnicity), he chose to try to find out everything he always wanted to know about Indians in fewer than 30 minutes—with a major focus (as I remember) on poverty, dysfunction, and casinos. While you diplomatically attempted (several times) to return to the topic of discussion, he kept peppering you (in his genteel way) with inane questions. Is there a lesson in this? I don't know.
