Established in 2006 by Dr. Debbie Reese of Nambé Pueblo, American Indians in Children's Literature (AICL) provides critical analysis of Indigenous peoples in children's and young adult books. Dr. Jean Mendoza joined AICL as a co-editor in 2016.

Crossing Bok Chitto by Tim Tingle is on the Texas Bluebonnet list for next year. Since receiving the order, I read this one first since I've been a fan of Tim Tingle's storytelling since I saw him perform at a TLA storytelling concert. This is a beautiful legend of the Choctaw people, demonstrating a cooperation between two peoples who experienced oppression, black slaves and Native Americans. Tingle is a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
ReplyDeleteI have read the series of five books, in Chahta and in English, to my grandchildren. They really relate to Norma Howard's illustrations. Having the stories there in both languages is important. I commend Minko Greg Pyle and the Nation for their support of the language and for producing this series. James BlueWolf

ReplyDeleteAre you a native speaker of Choctaw? I'm curious how native speakers use/respond to this series. It seems that most people I know who are familar with the books use them primarily or soley as language-teaching tools. But I have not yet met a native speaker who has read the texts.
