Moreover, there is a note at the back about the Osage family name used in the book and that Smith has their permission to use their name for that character. <br /><br />One thing I did not note in the book is the network that exists amongst the shifters. That same kind of network is part of Native communities in cities or urban areas. <br /><br />One of those assimilation policies I referenced is the relocation program, by which the government sought to break down nationhood and commitment to staying on ones homeland by offering jobs in major cities. Many Native people chose to seek those jobs, but as soon as they'd arrive, they'd find that network there. It was important to their identities to find and socialize with other Native people. <br /><br />That is why there are American Indian Centers in major cities, like Chicago. Indeed, Smith's INDIAN SHOES is set in Chicago. it is about a family who ended up there, due to that relocation program.
